OTN eConsult Powers Response From Specialists in Five Days or Less

Family physicians and nurse practitioners can now get a response to their clinical questions in less than five days thanks to eConsult, a Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care funded service available through the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN). There are no costs for the inquiries, in fact, where applicable, family physicians can bill OHIP for the consult request using fee code K738.

Through a private and secure web page, providers can ask a specialist a clinical question about a patient and receive advice quickly and securely. Through eConsult, providers can also attach documents such as a PDF of the patient’s EMR chart, lab results and digital images.

OTN in conjunction with OntarioMD, has already rolled out this eConsult service in Toronto Central, Central, Central East, South West and North East LHINs and supports 27 specialty areas from hematology and cardiology to neurology and endocrinology. For a full list of available specialty areas or for more information on the program status in other LHINs, visit:  https://otnhub.ca/patient-care/

To access OTN eConsult, click on this link, fill in the OTN sign-up form and a member of OTN will contact you to guide you through the process. The OTN sign-up process has recently been made more user friendly based on user feedback.

This update is brought to you as part of a partnership between the OCFP and OTN. The organizations are teaming up to provide family physicians in Ontario with a choice of online educational content, tools and services that will enable collaboration and enhanced communication with peers and specialists, enable better management of their practices and support high-quality patient care. OTNhub and OTN eConsult are just two of the offerings you will be hearing about in the coming months.

OTN would be pleased to answer any questions you may have.  Please contact us at OTN4OCFP@otn.ca or 1-855-654-0888.
