Dr. ​Bob Algie is Ontario’s Family Physician of the Year

Family doctors are dedicated to providing patients with exceptional care from birth until end-of-life. Dr. ​Bob Algie of Fort Frances is a physician, teacher and leader who embodies the best of what being a family doctor is all about. For over 35 years he has been by caring for families in his community and helping to shape primary care in Ontario.

In celebration of  his contributions, the Ontario College of Family Physicians is proud to announce that Dr. Algie is the 2015 Reg. L Perkin Ontario Family Physician of the Year.

“A pillar in his community, Dr. Algie demonstrates a profound dedication to his patients, colleagues and profession,” said OCFP President Dr. Cathy Faulds. “He has changed the landscape of rural family medicine in northwestern Ontario, helping to establish the Fort Frances Family Health Team and sharing his passion for integrated primary care with tomorrow’s doctors."

Ontario Family Physician of Year

Currently practicing comprehensive family medicine in a rural community, Dr. Algie has been the Chief of Staff with Riverside Health Centre in Fort Frances, Ont. and lead physician for his clinical group, where he established the local Family Health Team. He also works closely with Aboriginal communities, providing primary care and consultations for nurse practitioners at the Gizhewaadiziwin Health Access Centre.

Dr. Algie is committed to advancing the role family physicians play in delivering the highest quality care to patients and families across Ontario. This is demonstrated in his work as a preceptor for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), where he is mentor to residents and medical school students, and a Board member. He has also served as an Executive Member-at-Large of the Ontario Medical Association (Rural Section) and was a member of the OCFP’s Executive Committee for four years, before serving as President in 2009-10.

Graduating from Queen’s University in 1980, Dr. Algie completed a rotating internship with the Ottawa Civic Hospital in 1981 and received his Certification in Family Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 1989.

About the Reg. L Perkin Ontario Family Physician of the Year Award

Named in honour of Dr. Reg L. Perkin, College of Family Physicians of Canada Executive Director from 1985 to 1996, the award is the OCFP’s highest honour and is presented to a member who provides exceptional care to patients while significantly contributing to the health and well-being of communities and greater society. The winner is chosen from the Regional Family Physician of the Year award winners who are recognized through the OCFP’s annual Honours and Awards program.

The Reg L. Perkin award will be presented by Dr. Reg L. Perkin himself at the OCFP’s President’s Installation and Awards Ceremony on Nov. 12 in Toronto.
