Port Perry Family Doctor Named Family Physician of the Year

Fortunately for those who are, or have been her patients, colleagues, students or neighbours, the word ‘care’ has a very broad meaning for Dr. Merrilee Brown.

Dr. Brown, who has spent nearly two decades providing primary care to patients in her community of Port Perry, Ont., has been recognized as the 2016 Reg L. Perkin Family Physician of the Year. The award is presented annually by the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP) to a family doctor who provides exceptional care to patients while significantly contributing to the health and wellbeing of their community.

No doubt, it’s easy to list the number of ways Dr. Brown cares for her patients’ physical needs and wellbeing: she attends to patients in clinics, in their homes and in hospitals, delivers babies, provides palliative care and works in emergency rooms.

But caring for the health of her community members goes well beyond the clinic and hospital for Dr. Brown.

Through her faculty positions at Queen’s University and the University of Toronto, and as lead physician of the Medical Associates of Port Perry group, Dr. Brown shares her love of rural family medicine with medical students, residents and other health professionals.

“The award is a validation not so much for me personally but for all ‘in the trenches’ family doctors who provide truly comprehensive ‘cradle to grave‘ family medicine,” said Dr. Brown. “I represent those rural doctors who love the richness of the experience of taking care of a community for a generation or more and the teachers of family medicine who share that joy with the next generation of rural family doctors.”

And for this rural family doctor, the richness of caring for her community extends to causes large and small. Whether coordinating a health-care strategy as part of the Syrian Refugee Settlement Project, raising funds for the local library or volunteering as a member of the community concert band and church choir, she epitomizes the commitment and care that make her an exemplary family physician.

“As both a community-based physician and a teacher of tomorrow’s doctors, Dr. Brown epitomizes the skills, care and commitment of the ideal family doctor,” said OCFP President Dr. Glenn Brown. “It is a great privilege to celebrate her contributions and accomplishments.”
